Those who know me best are aware that I have a long-standing fear of animals; mainly dogs, although horses get me too. So I decided to be a 'big girl' and try again after Reiki training by setting the intention to overcome this fear while volunteering at Pooch Savers Rescue. I had the pleasure of speaking with Scott (one of the owners) about their program and was truly impressed with their passion project. The Pooch Savers team carefully and thoughtfully facilitate each and every adoption by matching up the perfect pet with the perfect family. Scott must have seen the look in my eyes when he came to my "rescue" with a brief conversation about how approaching pets with confidence can change the interaction entirely.
After meeting and spending time with all of the dogs at the show that day, I decided to focus on Pepper; a beautiful although quite anxious young pup with a traumatic past. She had spent most of the day separated from the others as she had just arrived to Pooch Savers, was recently spayed, and shaved due to the condition of her matted coat! As a Reiki Master, I work with energy and incorporate key hand positions and symbols to scan the body for areas that may need extra power, grounding, and/or emotional healing. It is fascinating to me how much pet Reiki is just like that of their human counterparts, offering them a deep state of relaxation from which true healing can occur. Reiki has enabled me with the ability to help people and pets move energy, see the entanglements of the physical body and the emotional self, and work with you and your pooch to let them go. Reiki is just as effective in person as it is over the phone, and often more comfortable for pet and owner. Pepper was alert and a bit distrustful at the beginning of the session, but slowly she sank further and further into my lap until she was sprawled out comfortably. Word has it that a family is already interested in adopting Pepper!
I was humbled when Scott asked if I would become one of his community partners and the ideas started percolating on how I could be of help to Pooch Saver customers with distance Reiki services, from the comfort of their own home. In addition to Reiki sessions for owners and pets separately, I was inspired by my experience with Pepper to begin offering Reiki for the relationship between pet and owner and name the service Pet Bonding Reiki*.
